13th Battalion Volunteer Partisan Rangers

[also known as 13th Battalion Cavalry]

[Companies  A   B   C   D   E   F   G]

From Bergeron, La. Confed. Units, 61:

"This battalion was organized on August 26, 1862, at Monroe; Companies E and F came from Bayliss' Louisiana Battalion Partisan Rangers.  The men did picket duty in East Carroll Parish near Lake Providence for several months.  In November, four independent companies were added to the battalion to create the 3rd Louisiana Cavalry.  Colonel J. Frank Pargoud received a commission to command the new regiment.  Many of the officers and enlisted men of the former battalion protested the appointment of Pargoud over Chambliss.  During the confusion created by this consolidation of units, a Federal raid struck Delhi and Dallas Station without opposition from any Confederate forces.  As a result of this raid, the 13th Battalion was restored as a separate organization.  The battalion returned to its duty in East Carroll Parish and fought in a skirmish at Lake Providence on February 10, 1863.  The men helped in attempts to oppose the march of General Ulysses S. Grant's Union army through northeastern Louisiana in April.  On May 10, several companies fought skirmishes at Caledonia and Pin Hook.  Colonel Frank Bartlett led the battalion and a Texas cavalry unit in an attack on the Federal garrison in the town of Lake Providence on June 9.  By early July, the battalion had moved to Delhi.  The men soon became part of Colonel Isaac F. Harrison's cavalry brigade.  Lieutenant Colonel Capers received permission in October to recruit new companies and raise the battalion to a regiment.  He had succeeded in his task by early the next year; and on February 20, 1864, the new unit was organized as the 5th Louisiana Cavalry Regiment."
