"4th Infantry Regiment, formerly the 1st Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi Regiment, was formed during October, 1862.  It soon became the 54th Alabama Infantry Regiment.  Its field officers were Colonel Alpheus Baker, Lieutenant Colonel John A. Minter, and Majors Joseph Barbiere and Thaddeus H. Shackelford."
