5th Regiment Volunteer Infantry

[Companies  F&S   A   B   C   D   E   F   G   H   I   K   ?]

From Bergeron, La. Confed. Units, 83-84:

"This regiment was organized at Camp Moore on June 4, 1861, with 863 men.  The regiment went to Virginia and took its station near Warwick Court House as part of the Army of the Peninsula.  During the winter of 1861, the men did some duty at Williamsburg and learned how to operate field artillery pieces.  The men played a minor role in the engagement at Dam No. 1, or Lee's Mill, April 16, 1862, and in a skirmish at Williamsburg, May 4.  At New Bridge on the Chickahominy River near Richmond, the regiment was driven back in a fight with the 4th Michigan Infantry on May 24.  In the engagement, 75 men of the regiment were killed, wounded, or missing.  The regiment saw little fighting in the Seven Days' Battles except in a successful engagement at White Oak Swamp on June 29.  On July 26, the regiment was brigades with the 6th, 7th, 8th, and 14th Louisiana regiments and Wheat's Battalion.  The men were only lightly engaged at Cedar Mountain on August 9.  During the 2nd Manassas Campaign, the regiment fought at Bristoe Station, August 26; at Kettle Run, August 27; and at 2nd Manassas, August 29-30.  On September 1, the men participated in the Battle of Chantilly.  The regiment was heavily engaged at the Battle of Sharpsburg, September 17; 49 men were killed or wounded.  At Fredericksburg, on December 13, the regiment was in reserve at Hamilton's Crossing.  On April 29, 1863, the regiment and the 6th Louisiana Infantry disputed the construction of pontoon bridges and the crossing of the Rappahannock River by the Federals south of Fredericksburg.  The regiment participated in the Battle of Salem Church, May 4.  At the Battle of Winchester, June 13-15, the regiment acted as the brigade reserve and saw little fighting.  The men helped attack and rout part of the Union army at Gettysburg on July 1 and participated in the attack on Cemetery Hill late on July 2.  A small detachment of the regiment and of men from the 9th Louisiana Infantry conducted a raid across the Rapidan River at Raccoon Ford on September 16 and captured 42 men of the 5th New York Cavalry.  When the Federals overran the brigade at Rappahannock Station, November 7, practically the entire regiment (123 officers and enlisted men) fell into enemy hands.  The remnants of the regiment fought in the Battle of the Wilderness, May 5, 1864, and at Spotsylvania, May 9-19.  The men helped stop the Federal attack at the Mule Shoe on May 12 during the latter battle.  In June, the men marched into the Shenandoah Valley and participated in all the battles fought there during the summer and fall.  The 5th, 6th, and 7th Louisiana regiments suffered a large number of casualties.  Therefore, by late October, its remnants had been consolidated into one company.  The men saw duty in the trenches at Petersburg.  They surrendered at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.  Only 1 officer and 18 enlisted men were still on duty at the surrender.  Of the 1,074 men who served in the regiment, 161 died in battle, 66 died of disease, 2 died in accidents, 1 was murdered, and 1 was executed.  About 118 men deserted."
