[attached to 1st Regiment Cavalry, September 1861-Summer 1863]

From Bergeron, La. Confed. Units, 36:

"Little information on this unit exists.  It organized as a company of mountain howitzers attached to the 1st Louisiana Cavalry in September, 1861.  The battery followed the fortunes of the 1st Cavalry through the summer of 1863.  The men played prominent roles in the engagements at Athens, Alabama, May 1, 1862, and at Big Hill, Kentucky, August 23, 1862.  In the summer of 1863, former members of Wheat's Louisiana Tiger Battalion were added to the battery to make it a full company, and Captain Robinson assumed command.  The battery received four 10-pounder Parrott rifled guns captured from the enemy in eastern Tennessee.  Called the Louisiana Horse Artillery, the battery served with Colonel John Scott's cavalry brigade in the Chickamauga Campaign and in the operations around Chattanooga.  One section delayed the crossing of the Tennessee River by part of the Union army in November, 1863, just prior to the Battle of Missionary Ridge.  General Braxton Bragg ordered the consolidation of his horse artillery batteries in December, and the men of the battery received assignments to other units, ending the separate history of the battery."
